Lego Club is back! Join Miss Gayle in the Conference Room at 2:30 pm Friday, February 5th, 2016 for Lego engineering fun for 2nd through 6th graders. Lego Club happens every 1st and 3rd Friday, so mark your calendars.  
 
Soup Night!  Do you like soup?  Then you're not going to want to miss Soup Night  with author Maggie Stuckey.  Maggie will present two special programs, one at the Florence Branch, 1460 9th Street, in the Bromley Room, starting at 6:00 pm, and the second at the Mapleton Library at 12 Noon on Thursday, January 28th.  Maggie will talk about her book, "Soup Night" and about starting your own "Soup Group".  Free soup samples from recipes in her book will be provided, courtesy of the excellent cooks from the Friends of the Library.

Tax Help:  Once again, starting Monday, February 1 at 9:30 a.m.,  the AARP tax volunteers will provide free tax preparation service for senior citizens and low-income taxpayers.  This service will be available every Monday and Thursday, excluding holidays, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. from February 1st until April 14 in the Bromley Room of the Siuslaw Public Library at 1460 9th Street in Florence.  In addition this service will be available Saturday, April 9th from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Bring your return from last year (including tax documents), a photo ID and Social Security card(s) in addition to your 2015 tax information.  Please park in the lot across the street belonging to Cross Road Assembly of God.  Do not park in the library lot. 
 
Please note:  This service is provided by AARP Foundation Tax Aide volunteers.  Library staff are not able to assist taxpayers in the preparation of their taxes or offer tax advice. This service is first-come, first served and there may be days when it is necessary to limit the number of taxpayers processed.  
 
New Website!  We've been hard at work behind the scenes and now our new website is running.  Check it out at www.siuslawlibrary.org or www.siuslawlibrary.info.  For those with older browsers and those who need a website that will work with screen reader programs, this older website will remain available.

Are you puzzled about ebooks?  Do you wonder why books by your favorite authors are not available through the Library2Go program?  The American Library Association created a fact sheet explaining many issues related to ebook availability in libraries.  The fact sheet is available in .pdf format at this link, and printed copies are also available at the library reference desk. 

Get a Pass!  Have you ever wanted to visit the Cascade Raptor Center in Eugene, but felt like you couldn't afford the admission fees?  Now you can check out a family visitor's pass at the Siuslaw Public Library that has an admission value of up to $25.00.  The library has three passes, and each pass may be checked out for up to one week, for a one time use to visit the Raptor Center at no cost.  Ask staff at the public service desk for more information and assistance in checking out a pass.

In the Lobby:  Florence Regional Arts Alliance members are displaying their talents in the lobby gallery and case during January.  Works in an amazing range of media, including pastels, oils, acrylics, Giclee prints, scratchboards, photography, mixed media collage, graphite prints, oil pastels, fabric arts, wood craft, fused glass, stained glass, clay and jewelry are on display. 
 
Inside the Library:  The Brubaker Wall gallery features the art of Tim Creager.  Tim has created images of the lighthouses of the Oregon Coast in the pointillist style of pencil. Even the shapes and shadows were created using hundreds of tiny pencil dots!  The inside display cases features photography by Mark Brennon.  The north and south wall galleries at the back of the quiet area feature a collection of historical maps, courtesy of Living History Maps.com   Above the great room, the rafters feature ten spectacular Rokkaku kites from Gomberg Kite Productions in Neotsu, Oregon.  Rokkaku is a traditional Japanese bowed kite design; a basic hexagon in shape, it features six corners, a long center spine and two cross spars. 
 
At the Mapleton Branch:  On the walls are our new Vintage Photo Display, showcasing scenes from Mapleton's past. The display case currently features the Advanced Reader's copies from the 2015 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association convention to borrow and review.  
 
   Friends of the Library
 
The Friends of the Library will hold their next regular monthly meeting on Thursday, January 28th at 11:00 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Siuslaw Library. Meet the new officers!  All members of the Friends are encouraged to attend as well as anyone interested in joining the Friends.
 
Book Sale!  The Friends will hold a two-day book sale Saturday, February 6 and Sunday, February 7th in the Bromley Room of the Siuslaw Public Library Florence branch at 1460 9th Street.  The sale will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.  A pre-sale for FOL members only will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.  Memberships may be purchased at the door.  Hardbacks and trade paperbacks will be $1.00 each and pocket paperbacks will be 50 cents.  A large accumulation of books withdrawn from the library will be included at half price.  All proceeds support the Siuslaw Public Library District and its programs.  
 
Community RewardsYou are now able to link your Fred Meyer Rewards card to your favorite nonprofit - The Friends of the Siuslaw Public Library - by going to this website:  http://www.fredmeyer.com/company_information/FM_Community/Pages/community_rewards.aspx, and entering the Friends' organization identification number:  84056.  Whenever you use your Rewards Card when shopping at Freddy's you will be helping the Friends of the Siuslaw Public Library earn a donation from Fred Meyer.  If you do not have a Rewards Card, you can sign up for one at the Customer Service Desk of any Fred Meyer store.  The BIG question??? Do I still get Rewards points, Fuel points and rebates?  YES!  Rewards customers still get their Rewards points, Fuel points and Rebates, and your Friends also get a donation. 
 
And don't forget the Friends sale racks inside the library entrance.  You can find top-quality gently used books for adults and children all year 'round, along with unique handmade greeting cards and sturdy book bags.

 Children's Programs:
 
Baby Storytime and Play Sessions, every Monday at 10:30 , in the children's area at the main branch.  This program is presented in partnership with Healthy Families Lane County.  Come with your baby for playtime, social time, and mom to mom support. For more information about this and other children's services, click here.
 
Join us for Preschool Storytime too, every Tuesday and Friday, 10:30-11:30 in the story pit at the main branch, with songs, fingerplays, crafts, and of course, books! 
 
Learn more about the importance of storytimes, with reading, singing, talking and fingerplays at StORytime Oregon.com, a new statewide reading initiative. Watch videos with Oregon families as they find everyday activities, everywhere, to help their children build early literacy skills with reading, talking, singing, counting and more! 
 
Holiday Closures
The Library will be closed all day Monday, February 15th, in honor of President's  Day.
