On May 7, 1915, the first public library in the Florence area opened to the public. In February 1955 the Florence City Council formally legalized the status of the Florence Public Library, thereby making it a department of city government.  The Siuslaw Public Library District was created by the voters in 1985 as a special district in Western Lane County, and is overseen by an elected board of five directors.
